Experimental dynamic collapse response of post-and-beam mass timber frames under a sudden column removal scenario

چکیده

Abstract In this study, an experimental program was carried out to investigate the dynamic behaviour of post-and-beam mass timber frames, manufactured from LVL structural products, under a sudden column removal scenario. Twenty-five free-fall and two additional static tests were performed on scaled-down frames assembled with three beam-to-column connection types, referred as “Double-beam”, “Megant type” “T-section”, currently used in buildings. The responses, failure modes increase factors (DIF) are presented discussed. For connections exhibiting brittle timber, cracks found develop earlier than tests, resulting large DIF values over 2.0. However, for displaying ductile modes, design value 1.5 proposed literature be reasonable. Pseudo-static responses calculated inconsistent predicting responses. This paper presents essential understanding lay foundation future further studies aiming at investigating entire buildings with, e.g. cross laminated (CLT) floors.

Influence of Sudden Column Loss on Dynamic Response of Steel Moment Frames under Blast Loading

Modeling buildings response to blast and subsequent progressive collapse interested more and more researchers during the past two decades. Due to the threat from extreme loading, efforts have been made to develop methods of structural analysis and design. In this paper, progressive collapse capacity of steel moment frames was first investigated using alternate load path method, then a nonlinear...

Numerical Study of Progressive Collapse in Framed Structures: A New Approach for Dynamic Column Removal (TECHNICAL NOTE)

Progressive collapse is a situation where local failure of a primary structural component leads to the collapse of adjoining members which, in turn, leads to additional collapse. Hence, the total damage is disproportionate to the original cause. The most common local failure in framed structure is assumed to be column failure. In this paper, a new approach for dynamic column removal in framed s...

Analytical and Experimental Investigation of I Beam-to-CFT Column Connections under Monotonic Loading (RESEARCH NOTE)

In this study, the behavior characteristics of I beam-to-concrete filled tube (CFT) column connection is studied through experiment and finite element models under the monotonic loading. To validate the finite element modeling, at first, an experimental model is made and experimented. After validation of the finite element modeling, different models were created in the software. The studied par...

Ash and sulphur removal from bitumen using column flotation technique: Experimental and response surface methodology modeling

This study investigates removing ash and pyrite sulphur from bitumen by column flotation process. Central composite design (CCD) of response surface methodology (RSM) was applied for modeling and optimization of the percentage of ash and pyrite sulphur removal from bitumen. The effects of five parameters namely the amounts of collector and frother agents, particle size, wash water rate and feed...

Threat-Independent Column Removal and Fire-Induced Progressive Collapse: Numerical Study and Comparison

Progressive collapse is defined as the spread of an initial failure from element to element, eventually resulting in the collapse of an entire structure or a disproportionately large part of it. The current progressive collapse analyses and design methods in guidelines and codes focus on the alternate load path method. This method is suitable especially in the case of blast-induced progressive ...
